Betting for Beginners

WIN: You bet on a horse to finish first.

PLACE: Your horse must finish first or second in races with six or seven horses and first, second or third in races with eight or more horses.

CROSS THE BOARD: You’re betting to win and place. If your horse wins, you collect on the win and place bets. If your horse comes in second in races with six or seven horses or second or third in races with eight or more horses you collect on the place bets only.

DAILY DOUBLE: Pick the winners of the two races so designated in the programme. Usually races 1 and 2, 3 and 4, etc.

QUINELLA: Pick the horses that come in first AND second in a race in ANY order.

EXACTA: Pick the horses that come in first and second in a race in the EXACT order.

TRIFECTA: Pick the first three finishers of a race in EXACT order.

SUPERFECTA: Pick the first four finishers of a race in EXACT order.

PICK THREE/ FOUR/ FIVE/ SIX/ SEVEN/ EIGHT OR NINE: Pick the winners of the three/four/five/six/seven/eight or nine consecutive races or otherwise as the case may be.

BOX: If you have two or more horses that you think will finish in the top spots, but you’re not sure of the order, you can box them. Example: an Exacta Box on horses #3 and #6. You win if #3 wins and #6 comes second OR #6 wins and #3 comes second.

WHEEL: A bet on one horse with ALL the others in the race. An “Exacta wheel #5 – all” wins if the #5 horse wins and ANY horse comes in 2nd.

KEY OR PART WHEEL: A bet on one horse with SOME of the others. An “Exacta wheel #5- 2, 3, 4″ wins if the #5 horse wins and either the #2, #3 or #4 horse comes in 2nd.

ADVICE TO ALL PUNTERS

PLEASE DECIDE ON YOUR SELECTIONS AND TYPE OF BET BEFORE YOU REACH THE TELLER.
HAVE YOUR MONEY READY TO PAY FOR THE COST OF YOUR BET.
BET EARLY AND AVOID THE LAST MINUTE RUSH AND TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT OF NOT PLACING YOUR BET IN TIME. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL HORSES ARE ON THE WAY TO THE GATE.
YOU CAN BET OUT OF THE PROCEEDS OF A WINNING TICKET WHICH YOU MAY HAVE TO CASH – THE MACHINE IS DESIGNED TO DO JUST THAT.

EXACTA BOX

If you have two or more horses you think will finish in the top spots, but you’re not sure of the order, you can box them.

Example:

#3 and #6. You win if #3 wins and
#6. comes second OR #6 wins and 3 comes second.

If you play your key horse for that win and it finishes first and if 2 of the other horses on which you have wagered finish second and third, in any order you win. You may also play your KEY horse for second or third.
