Arima Race Club
NOTES FROM THE STEWARDS
FRIDAY 13TH OCTOBER, 2017.
STIPENDARY STEWARDS: RICHARD HALFHIDE WINSTON GOVIA DAVID LOREGNARD
Jockey K. Khelawan was fined $100.00 for his late arrival in the jockey’s room.
The Stewards were without the use of the home straight head-on camera for this race.
The Stewards noted that jockey Jose Nava Marin was declared to ride #8 RED WINE and #9 BIG IN CLASS both being trained by Jimmy Rampersad. On interview trainer Rampersad could give no satisfactory explanation as to how one jockey was declared to ride two horses under his care. The Stewards found that trainer Rampersad was guilty of having made improper riding arrangements and fined him $500.00 for the infringement.
The Stewards interviewed jockey Ryan Hasranah regarding the performance and his riding of #2 ROYAL BALLET in the race.
The Jockey stated that his instruction was to be up on the pace but the horse was not performing.
On interview the trainer stated that his instructions were to ‘ride the horse’ as it would loaf it not ridden continuously. The Stewards found that jockey Hasranah’s riding did not afford the horse the chance of obtaining its best possible placing. Jockey Hasranah was reported to have left the premises when the Stewards attempted to re-interview him. The matter will be concluded on the next race-day.
The Steward noted that #9 CONSIDERITDONE reared at the off.
The Stewards interviewed jockey S. Rodrigo as they observed that he took his feet out of the stirrups shortly after the start and trailed the field. The jockey stated that the horse’s action caused him to believe that the horse was patently unsound and therefore he took his feet out of the irons out of caution. His explanation was noted.
The Stewards received two (2) objections as follows:
(1) R. Ali rider of #7 LOCATOR, placed fourth, against #11 SHE IS MY EMPRESS, placed third, ridden by apprentice R. Hernandez for crossing in the final 50 minutes;
(2) D. Khelawan rider of #9 LIL MARIE, unplaced, against #12 BRISK WOMAN, unplaced, ridden by apprentice D Rodrigo for foul riding around the 800 metre mark.
In respect of the first objection the Stewards found that SHE IS MY EMPRESS, racing for the first time, moved inward in response to two strokes of the whip. They were satisfied that SHE IS MY EMPRESS was going better than LOCATOR and the incident happened within the last few strides of the race. Accordingly the results were allowed to stand and apprentice Hernandez was cautioned to be more careful in his use of the whip.
In respect of the second objection the Stewards observed that approaching the 600 metre bend BRISK WOMAN was angled inward from the wide outside and took the ground of LIL MARIE on the rail, forcing the latter to be checked sharply. Apprentice Rodrigo claimed that the horse altered course suddenly as if it had broken down but the Official Veterinarian reported nothing amiss post race. The Stewards found that apprentice Rodrigo appeared to lose control when maneuvering inward causing the incident. She was fined $200.00 for careless riding and apprentice tutor R. La Guerre requested to work with Rodrigo in an effort to improve her riding skill.
Trainer Bobby Persad was fined $500.00 for the withdrawal of #10 SUPER EASY without the Stewards’ permission.
Jockey K. Razack rider of #15 SETTLED D’ ACCOUNT, unplaced, objected to #16 I’MMISSINGHIGHBURY, unplaced, for foul riding at the 800 metre mark. Having seen the video replay and heard the rider’s evidence the Stewards found that #14 MISCHIEF MAKER, ridden by S. Rodrigo attempted to angle outward to avoid clipping the heels of #17 UNGUARDED MOMENT. This manouvre caused the hauncles of MISCHIEF MAKER to make contact with SETTLED D’ ACCOUNT. Jockey Rodrigo was cautioned to exercise more care in his riding.
The Official Veterinarian reported that #3 JUST HONEST was withdrawn at the starting gate. Jockey uncomfortable with mount and it was found to be lame on the left fore (Grade 2).
The Stewards observed that approaching the 500 metre mark #1 TAKEONEFORJOEY stumbled and was immediately pulled up. Jockey N. Abrego was observed to be unseated and the horse appeared to have suffered a catastrophic fracture of the right fore fetlock.
The Official Veterinarian reported that #1 TAKEONEFORJOEY returned with complete open fracture of right fore fetlock and was euthanised.
The Stewards observed that on entering the home straight #3 SEE THE LIGHT fell and #7 SORAYAH, tripped over also falling. The Stewards were satisfied that the incident was accidental.
The Starter reported that #8 AL KAHINA refused and trainer B. Persad was advised that since this was the second consecutive occasion, any repetition would result in the Stewards having to take action.
